Mathias Sinning is an Associate Professor of Economics at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy, Associate Dean (Research) of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, and Deputy Director of the ANU Tax and Transfer Policy Institute. He is the architect of an econometric method to estimate generalised quantile treatment effects. His research focuses on extending and applying this method in experimental and quasi-experimental settings. He has published extensively in various domains of economics, including public economics, labour economics, health economics, development economics, and behavioural economics.

Mathias has designed, implemented, and analysed Randomised Controlled Trials in collaboration with government departments in Australia and internationally. He has led, managed, and participated in large research projects on behavioural aspects of tax compliance in collaboration with tax agencies in Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. He currently leads a project in collaboration with the government of the Australian Capital Territory on the use of nudges as a local government environmental policy instrument, funded by the Australian Research Council.

His academic background includes previous appointments at the ANU and the University of Queensland, as well as Visiting Fellowships at Princeton University and Peking University. He is a Research Fellow of RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and IZA Institute of Labor Economics, and a Research Affiliate of MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).
