Have you always wanted to attend the international climate negotiations Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting and have your voice heard? Are you a First Nations or Pacific Islander graduate student at the Australian National University? Have you got a background in climate change issues, or something important to say?

The ANU Vice Chancellor and the College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) are offering 5- 6 scholarships to support the emerging generation of First Nations or Pacific Islander leaders, to contribute to game-changing climate change negotiations and outcomes, by joining the ‘ANU Climate Alumni’ leadership program.

Students will receive mentoring from leading ANU climate change negotiators and scholars, including those from a First Nations and Pacific Islander background. They will receive support to attend the UNFCCC Conference of the parties, held in the UAE 2023.

Field of study

Understanding Climate Change Negotiations and Climate Change Issues

Eligibility

The award will be available each year to 2-3 continuing PhD or Masters students who meets the following Eligibility Criteria:

1. a domestic and/or international student; and
2. undertaking a PhD/Masters project related to climate change, or with a keen interest in climate change issues, supported by a developed project brief; and
3. be either First Nations Indigenous Australian or Pacific Islander.

Applications that don’t meet these criteria will not be considered.

Benefits

The award covers the following costs:

• An award up to $10,000 to support costs of accommodation, flights and a $75 day per diem in UAE • An additional benefit is the opportunity for a professional or personal mentorship with a member of the ANU Climate Alumni Leadership program.

How to apply

Candidates apply at the details listed below.

Selection will be made on the basis of the following Selection Criteria:

1. applicability of the candidates project to contribute to climate change negotiations, civil society activities or other climate change related outcomes at COP, and
2. academic merit, potential and performance based on their academic record, referee reports and other evidence; and
3. the applicant’s background and reasons for seeking the scholarship including applicant’s demonstration of how the scholarship could be a game-changer for climate change negotiations, or other activities at COP.

Applicants should submit the following application documents together in one email:

1. A concise letter (1-2 pages) addressing the Eligibility Criteria. Applications that do not address the Eligibility Criteria will not be considered. The letter must also outline the applicant’s background and explain why this scholarship would be a game-changer for them or for the COP28 negotiations, civil society activities or other climate change related outcomes at COP.
2. Supporting documents relating to the Selection Criteria, including: • 1-2 references from supervisors and/or other relevant sources, and • Academic transcripts and other relevant documents.
3. CV (of no more than 4 pages).
